The Grammys held last weekend and the man of the moment was Childish Gambino.The rapper's 'This Is America',a song which touches on just about every issue bedeviling the modern day American society from racial discrimination,mass shootings and police killings became the very first rap song to win the Record of the Year and Song of the Year categories.
The song also went on to win the Best Rap/Sung Performance category and also took home the award for Best video.The rapper who cited a hectic touring schedule as his reason for missing out on last Sunday's Grammys had been widely reported to be boycotting the show along with some top hip hop figures in protest of the Grammys' disregard for the genre.Gambino was billed to perform on the night.
He however wasn't the only hip hop artiste to make history as Cardi B edged out Pusha T,Nipsey Hustle and Mac Miller to win Best Rap Album for 'Invasion of Privacy' making her the first female solo rap artiste to win the category.
Cardi, who attended the show with rapper boo,Offset also shouted out late rapper,Mac Miller who she was nominated alongside with.
"I'm sharing this with you motherf**ker.RIP" she said in a video of her celebrating her win backstage.Watch
The rapper's husband,Offset also seized the moment to release a trailer for his upcoming documentary which is slated for a February 22 release date along with his first solo album.He is shown standing by Cardi in the labour room when she was giving birth to their child,Kulture.Watch
The 6god,Drake took home the Grammy for Best Rap Song with God's Plan and some controversy crept in when his very well articulated acceptance speech was cut short by the organizers.
While it was deemed in some quarters as the subsistence of a problem the Grammys had with hip hop,the producers issued a statement debunking all claims saying it appeared he had finished his speech when he paused.Watch
